BD Bookshelf: Theme Specification & Design Blueprint

1. Global Visual Layout

The layout follows a traditional professional author structure with a focus on scannability and accessibility.

Section Description
Header (Left) Site Identity: Displays the domain name without the extension (e.g., "bdmurphy").

| | Header (Center) | Primary Navigation: Horizontal menu with dynamic dropdowns for books and about sections.

| | Header (Right) | Language Selector: Global dropdown for English, French, German, Spanish, Russian, and Simplified Chinese.

| | Main Content | Activity Stream: A standard WordPress loop displaying news, updates, and general site content.

| | Sidebar (Right) | Goodreads Widget: A vertical list of the author’s books pulled from the Goodreads API.

2. Navigation & User Experience (UX)

The navigation bar acts as the primary interface for content discovery.

  • Website Home: Linked to the root URL; the label is dynamically generated from the site name (stripping .me).

  • My Books (Dropdown):

  • Main Page: A grid layout similar to Amazon detail pages showing book covers and titles.

  • Dynamic Submenu: Hovering over "My Books" displays a list of individual book titles fetched from the BD BookHelper plugin.

  • Reviews: A dedicated landing page aggregating review summaries stored in the helper plugin.

  • Blogs: Standard WordPress post list.

  • About (Dropdown):

  1. Author Profile: Bio, photo, awards, and social media links.

  2. Privacy: Legal information page.

  3. Newsletter: Email signup form integration.

  4. Archives: A list of previously sent email updates.

3. Multilingual Infrastructure

The theme must respond to the Language Selector to provide a localized experience.

  • Content Fallback: If a translation for a blog post or book detail is unavailable in the selected language, the system must default to displaying the English version.

  • Stored Translations: The BD BookHelper plugin acts as the source of truth for book covers, blurbs, and reviews in all five supported non-English languages.

4. Developer Requirements: Plugin Integration

BD Bookshelf (Theme Utility Plugin)

  • Metadata Storage: Must hold the Author Goodreads ID and Amazon Author Central ID.

  • Migration Tools: Includes a scanner to identify existing book pages and a transition function to map them into the new template format.

  • Translation Management: Handles the "English-as-fallback" logic for the blog engine.

BD BookHelper (Content Repository Plugin)

  • Unified Entry: Provides one interface for entering book covers, blurbs, and reviews in multiple languages.

  • Shortcodes:

  • Provides redirect URLs for seller sites (e.g., Amazon review pages).

  • Allows the author to create custom short-URL redirects for any feature.

  • Data Provider: Exposes book lists and details to the theme for the "My Books" navigation and detail pages.
